Create a Job Board

The Job Board is the answer to keeping the project paperwork together at the jobsite.

Look at the sample Job Board to the right.  It is a very simple and inexpensive tool to keep and display important job information relative to the project.  You can set your job board up any way that works for you, but the one we use has

  • an Emergency Contact List,
  • an envelope for messages from the subcontractors,
  • a copy of the Building Permit,
  • a Copy of the standard Terms and Conditions,
  • four more envelopes that can be used as needed, and
  • a 4″ PVC tube in which we store a copy of the latest set of approved plans.

What you need

  1. 36″ X 48″ OSB (I prefer 3/4″, but there is no reason 3/8″ or 1/2″ wouldn’t work), about $10.00 (I usually get mine from the scrap pile).
  2. 9 x 12 Job Ticket Holders x 8, less than $1.00 each.
  3. Medium-size Binder Clips x 8, less than $.25 each.
  4. Eight wood screws of appropriate length (will not penetrate back of Job Board).
  5. Eight washers of a size that the head of the wood screw will not go through center hole.
  6. 36″ length of 4″ PVC.  End caps are optional. Less than $2.00 (or ask your plumber).
  7. The discipline and management skills to make sure that all relevant information gets on the board.

Put the Job Board together

  1. Cut OSB to size.
  2. Drill a 1″ hole at top center to hang the board.
  3. Attach binder clips centered at 3″ from top and 7.5″, 18.5″, 29.5″ and 40.5″ from left edge.  Mount on board using wood screws. Use washer to retain clip on board.
  4. Attach binder clips centered at 18″ from top and 7.5″, 18.5″, 29.5″ and 40.5″ from left edge.
  5. Attach 36″ length of 4″ PVC at bottom.  Attachment can be either nut and bolt through back of board or metal plumber’s tape straps attached to board to secure tube.
  6. Insert appropriate documents into envelopes and clip to board.
  7. Insert rolled-up plans into PVC.
  8. Hang board on framing in building (I put it in the garage).
